Secret Cincinnati

Conceived as a place where anyone can discover Cincinnati’s hidden gems, Secret Cincinnati is the result of 25 entrepreneurial minds coming together over the course of a startup weekend.

The Challenge

Take a wildly successful Facebook group (amassed over 20,000 fans in 2 weeks) and translate it into an online community and database that collects and shares the best underpublicized discounts, events and places from around the city.

The Solution

We began with a call for applications through an article featured in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Over 100 people applied and we selected 25 entrepreneurial minds to be part of the startup weekend. Rallying around the egalitarian themes – Discover, Participate, Connect – we created a brand, marketing plan, and business plan in just 72 hours. We also drank 5 cases of energy drink.

In the months that followed, a smaller group of us worked on building out and testing a functional site on Drupal. Five committees — design, marketing, business development, events, and web development — continue to develop action plans for promoting Cincinnati’s hidden gems.

Currently in Beta testing, the site adheres to the open source ethos by putting the power of information in the hands of Cincinnatians and stepping back to watch them wield it.
