Washington Park

A collaboration between Emanuel Community Center and The Creative Department to gather public input on future events and programming for the renovated Washington Park.

The Challenge

A central civic space in Over-the-Rhine, Washington Park is a neighbor to some of Cincinnati’s most treasured cultural institutions, including the School for the Creative and Performing Arts, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Opera at Music Hall, and the Cincinnati Ballet.

A $46 million renovation, which is set to begin in August 2010, will expand the Cincinnati park from 6 to 8 acres and feature a public green space that includes an upgraded playground, an interactive water feature, performance stage, event plaza, dog park, and 450-space underground parking garage.

Emanuel Community Center, located across the street from Washington Park and focused on improving the area, came to the Creative Department seeking a creative way to collect ideas for future events and programming. As we are members of the Over-The-Rhine community we elected to take on this project on a pro bono basis.

The Solution

We decided to crowdsource ideas by inviting the community to be part of revitalizing Washington Park and make their voices heard. Through a easy-to-use idea collector built on Drupal, visitors to WashingtonPark.org can discover new ways to breathe new life into the park, share their ideas for future events and programming, and rate others ideas and discuss ways to move forward.

What I Did

I was responsible for concepting the site’s functionality and user experience, and crafting top-level site messaging and content.
