Dare to Speak: Voices of Resistance

The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education (CHHE) wanted to observe Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) with a film that celebrated acts of resistance during Holocaust.

The Challenge

On a limited budget and less than 2 months to complete the project, the project required incorporating existing interview footage with new interviews with local Holocaust survivors.

The Solution

We elected to keep it simple and let the people tell the story. We set up camp in a local community college and over the course of 4 days interviewed almost a dozen local spiritual leaders, educators, and survivors. As there was no budget for additional filming, we scanned in photos from survivors, and scoured archival libraries for imagery and footage from the period. A musician friend donated an original score for the film.

The resulting film won an Addy award for Public Service and continues to be used as an educational piece by the center.

What I Did

I conducted all interviews, wrote the story throughline, and directed the film.
