Kozmo.com

Kozmo.com was a an Internet startup company that provided one-hour delivery of music, magazines, books, food, and basics, as well as video, game, and DVD rentals. Started in 1998 in New York City by two investment bankers, Kozmo expanded to 10 additional cities before it shutdown one year after the dotcom bubble burst in April 2001.

The Challenge

I was hired to help launch the Chicago market as the Marketing & Sales Manager at the end of 1999 and opened the first distribution center in Lincoln Park in April 2000. I was responsible for managing a $1 million annual marketing budget and a team of marketing associates tasked with the identification, acquisition, and development of strategic relationships with vendors and affiliate partners, including the rollout of Starbucks co-branding partnership.

The Solution

After my budget and team were drastically cut in the 3rd Quarter of 2000, I shifted the market’s focus to the creation and execution of local promotional and guerilla marketing opportunities to drive revenue. This included the launch of Project Bread, a food bank that leveraged Kozmo delivery vehicles to supply area shelters.

As a result, Chicago expanded to an additional distribution center and was one of only three profitable markets at the time of shutdown.
